It's difficult to predict what will happen when someone takes a psychedelic trip. It's possible for someone to find themselves floating through space, coming face to face with the demons that stalk them, or some bizarre combination of the two.
However, the conclusion frequently has less dramatic events. Although the visceral impacts of the trip have mostly subsided, the consciousness-altering medication starts to wear off. For individuals receiving psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy in particular, this is a crucial time. The deep insights and emotions that a person encountered on their trip can start to fade away during these transitional minutes or hours. They may find it difficult to put into words what they feel in their bones or in their heart. Some people find it challenging to use a vacation as a springboard for revolutionary change due to the trip's elusive character. Integration, or the therapeutic process by which people make sense of their trip, is normally intended to help patients remember and interpret their insights, but as they approach closer to dosage, their memories aren't necessarily as clear-cut.
Psychiatrist Dr. Prash Puspanathan and scientist Agnieszka Sekula realised this difficulty a few years ago and launched Enosis Therapeutics, an Australian firm creating virtual reality situations to support psychedelic treatment. Along with developing a procedure for psychedelic therapy in virtual reality, they also developed a unique programme called AnchoringVR that generates an immersive environment for patients to explore once they start to come down from their trip.
The AnchoringVR scenario is started by the patient on any commercially available VR device at the end of their psychedelic trip, which can be four to five hours after receiving psilocybin or just after receiving an intravenous infusion of ketamine.
Using audio and visual components, the patient can then create their own VR environment. They might decide to sit by the water, engage virtually with a big rock, label it with a heavy emotional burden like a particular trauma, and thens toss it into the waves. A star can be selected from the night sky and then coupled with an audio clip of a thought or emotion that surfaced over the journey. That item then serves as a metaphor for an important realisation and serves as the patient's North Star. The few patients who have utilised AnchoringVR did so for 45 minutes right after their psychedelic trip, then rewatched the recordings with their therapist present during each integration session.
In a cocoon that is a manifestation of their own thinking, patients feel empowered to speak freely and at ease, according to Puspanathan, the company's lone investor. (Prior to establishing Enosis Therapeutics, Puspanathan served as CEO of a thriving small-scale bitcoin brokerage.)
Enosis has found a surprising niche in the billion-dollar race to find potent hallucinogenic chemicals. It is unexplored area to combine VR with psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, even if VR is utilised to achieve or enhance consciousness-altering states. Enosis aims to use VR's sense of surprise and awe to improve integration. Although the search for new psychedelic substances or the wonder of a psychedelic trip itself tend to attract the public's attention more, specialists say this treatment period is crucial to a complete recovery. Puspanathan and Sekula are raising significant issues regarding why that element of the psychedelic experience matters so much and how VR could play a crucial part in enhancing it in their efforts to develop technology that facilitates integration.
The definition of psychedelic integration
Bringing Enosis into the psychiatric and psychotherapy clinic, according to Dr. Sergio Pérez Rosal, CEO, cofounder, and medical director of OVID Clinic in Germany, was a "no brainer" when he personally tested AnchoringVR. According to Pérez Rosal, the two patients who underwent four integration sessions with AnchoringVR were fully involved in the procedure. Stars have been used by them to interact with, label, and record insights. Some stars had been changed into cared-for plants. Others were thrown into a fire to be burned or made into stones. Drawings of hearts, lovers, pets, and birds are just a few of the profound symbols they have come up with on their own. (Enosis and OVID declined to provide patients for interviews with the media, but Mashable saw a demo of AnchoringVR.)
This manner of interaction is consistent with OVID's strategy for psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, which blends pharmaceutical and psychological treatment with a seamless psychedelic experience.
We shift the emphasis away from the notion that [the psychedelic drug] will bring about the desired change, according to Pérez Rosal.
High-quality integration is crucial to assisting patients in drawing conclusions from their insights and making new or different decisions in their lives, even though some scientific research suggests that psychedelics may have a strong impact on neurones in the brain, potentially creating new pathways or repairing damaged or dysfunctional ones. Ketamine, an anaesthetic that causes a psychedelic experience, is used to treat patients at the OVID Clinic. In order to maximise the effectiveness of their treatment, patients participate in both preparatory and integrating sessions.
Prior to joining the clinical advisory board of Enosis, Dr. Margaret Ross, a senior clinical psychologist at St. Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, had known Puspanathan for many years. She also served as the chief principal investigator for the nation's first psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy study. Making sure that her end-of-life patients' integration process is as successful as possible is one of her top priorities as a psychologist who cares for them. She finds the technology of Enosis to be "very amazing" in this sense.
According to Ross, its nonverbal and symbolic design, which can "connect the conceptual and actual without making it too concrete or reducing it entirely to words," can aid patients. Patients who are desperate for psychedelic-assisted therapy to alleviate their severe anxiety or treatment-resistant depression frequently contact Ross, believing that the drug will automatically result in a transformation that will change their lives. They don't realise how much emotional effort it takes to make those changes after psychedelic effects have subsided.
Researchers are looking into the effectiveness of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted therapy for the treatment of PTSD in a clinical trial funded by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), which is unconnected to Enosis' research. Participants attend three therapy sessions with a therapist after each dose, according to Sarah Gael, a psychedelic therapist and one of the trial's researchers. To aid with the integration process, participants can employ movement, meditation, journaling, art, and other practises. Not always is it required or possible to analyse discoveries with language, which is important.
When a client completes psychedelic-assisted therapy, according to Gael, MAPS's harm reduction officer, they leave with a "handful of seeds," which may be new understandings, awareness, alterations in their self-perception, or even mystical spiritual experiences that can aid in healing and growth. Those seeds will eventually bloom if they are sown in healthy soil and under ideal circumstances. According to Gael, integration can also generate the ideal conditions for change.
